Situated on the northern coast of Sicily west of Palermo, Castellammare del Golfo began as a trading port until it was conquered by Arabs whose castle gave its name to the whole gulf. The tranquil harbor, fine sand beaches and waterfront cafes have made this town the gulf's main resort and a popular weekend getaway for Palermo residents.
